Dr. Soares is
a psychiatrist who earned his medical degree and PhD in Psychoneuroendocrinology
from the University of Sao Paulo Medical School, in Brazil. His postdoctoral
fellowship in Perinatal and Reproductive Psychiatry was completed in 2001
at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School. Dr.Soares
served as Director for Research at the MGH Perinatal Psychiatry Program
until 2004 where he still holds an active academic appointment as an Assistant
Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Soares' research
interests are primarily devoted to the study of female reproductive mood
disturbance, including the evaluation of new treatments for premenstrual
dysphoric disorder, and the role of hormonal and non-hormonal interventions
for treating depression and other complaints during the menopausal transition.
Other areas of interest include reproductive-related trauma and post-traumatic
stress disorders (PTSD) in women, psychiatric morbidity among female immigrants,
and risk factors for depression and anxiety during transition into menopause.
He has more than 70 publications (peer-reviewed manuscripts, books, and
book chapters). His papers are published in Archives of General Psychiatry,
Journal of Affective Disorders, Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, American
Journal of Psychiatry, and Menopause, ...etc. He has also worked as a reviewer
for major scientific publications in the field of psychiatry, endocrinology,
and obstetrics and gynecology, such as JAMA, Archives of General Psychiatry,
AJP, Fertility & Sterility, Psychosomatic Medicine, Psychoneuroendocrinology,
and Menopause, among others.
